I Am Coming To See You is a time-bending narrative that explores ancestral inheritance, love, and survival across generations and geographies. Presented in a unique, unfolding book form, the structure physically guides the reader inward—layer by layer—toward a core of connection, care, and reverence, while also confronting the societal conditions through which that care must persist.

The book invites readers to reflect on history while remaining grounded in the present. As the pages unfold, they metaphorically strip away the layers of city life, societal constraint, and technological noise—revealing an open, expansive space of nature, self-discovery, and ancestral connection. The form itself becomes a metaphor for unearthing hidden truths.

Rooted in my experience as a Black American, this story reflects an ongoing desire to connect with ancestors through nature, writing, and reflection—a process made increasingly difficult by urban displacement, gentrification, and the pervasive distractions of modern life. I Am Coming To See You speaks to a shared experience among many African Americans: the search for identity through fragmented histories and the deep longing to recognize the faces and names of loved ones lost to time.

Over the course of 15 pages, the work becomes an act of remembrance and reclamation. It calls on the reader to listen deeply—to step away from distraction and tune into the subtle ways our ancestors speak through the land, memory, and spirit. To know oneself, the book suggests, we must be willing to look back, listen, and unearth what was once hidden.
