DJABAL TARIK
A Lasercut Type Artist Book
Djabal Tarik is an ABC laser-cut book featuring my original typeface, inspired by the Moorish knights—particularly the Black Knights, known for their resilience during the Spanish conquest. The project centers historically marginalized narratives, challenging dominant histories and reclaiming overlooked contributions.
Each page is laser-cut from MDF, introducing a tactile, natural element that deepens the narrative. The material’s weight and texture evoke permanence and resilience, reinforcing the themes of endurance and historical memory. This physicality invites a multisensory engagement, connecting viewers more intimately to the story being told.
At the core of the work is an investigation into how typography and material form can embody complex histories. Through the convergence of design, narrative, and physical presence, Djabal Tarik becomes both a typographic artifact and a sculptural expression of resistance and remembrance.
